Wonder what we’re up to at GLAAD?

Be sure to check out GLAAD Blog each week for updates about our latest work to build support for LGBT equality through news, entertainment and online media.

Last week, GLAAD's Spanish-language media team worked to elevate the voices of LGBT Latinos for Father's Day stories in media.  We pitched and placed Miami dads Juan and Tom, and their recently-adopted son Lucas on Univision's highly-rated Despierta América, which to date is the No. 1 morning show in any language this season in Los Angeles, Miami and Houston. Juan also wrote a piece about Father's Day, and we placed it in Spanish on HuffPost Voces and in English on HuffPost Latino Voices. In addition, Juan also wrote a beautiful piece for Blogging for LGBT Families Day, about adopting his son Lucas.

GLAAD helped to amplify the story of Chris Martin, a 14 year-old from Pinellas County, FL, who was detained by his school principal for wearing makeup to school on the last day of classes. The Martin family was inspired by Marcel Neergaard and started a petition of their own. Tampa-area media picked up the story, and now the ACLU has sent a letter to the school to inform them that blocking boys from wearing makeup constitutes sex discrimination.

GLAAD is preparing the media and LGBT advocates for the forthcoming Supreme Court rulings on the discriminatory 'Defense of Marriage Act' (DOMA) and California's Proposition 8. FAQs, facts and figures, spokespeople and couples who are impacted by DOMA and Prop 8 are all available at www.glaad.org/marriage.

GLAAD joined Marriage Equality USA, as well as NY and CT couples to present on the issue of marriage equality to the employees of Xerox and the Day Pitney Law Firm. While the couples spoke about fighting for marriage equality within their states, they also spoke of how DOMA harmed their families. GLAAD's Ross Murray was on hand to discuss the increasingly positive polling on marriage equality nation-wide, and why the country is ready for marriage equality.

GLAAD urged New Yorkers on June 11th to participate in a statewide call-in day to pass the Gender Expression Non-Discrimination Act (GENDA) in New York State. The day was organized by Empire State Pride Agenda. Polls indicate that 78% of New York State residents support the act, which if passed would prohibit discrimination based on a person's gender identity or expression in employment, education, housing, and public accommodations. Such legislation is already in effect in 16 states and the District of Columbia, as well as in many individual cities and counties both within and outside of New York State. For five years in a row, the GENDA bill has successfully passed the New York State Assembly, but the Senate has refused to bring it to a full vote.
